Water main break undermines East Patrick Street
A section of East Patrick Street between Hamilton Avenue and Franklin Street was undermined by a water main break and must be torn out and rebuilt. Detours were set up to direct one way traffic around a sink 10 to 15 feet wide. Water Superintendent William J. Davis detected the damage near a tree on Nusbaum property and found the undermining extended under the pavement. The likely sink is 75 feet long, deepest near the sewer line, with possible sewer damage as well. Water service was halted for certain homes while alternate lines supplied customers. Work to remove the affected macadam began, with curb and gutter to be retained if possible. Gas mains near the site were untouched and officials were informed. The extent of the area will be confirmed as crews begin teardown.
