Guatemala Earthquake Death Toll Near 3,000 Officials Say
The National Emergency Committee estimates 2,500 to 3,000 dead, 15,000 injured, and 20,000 homeless from the quake that struck Guatemala. A U S airlift of aid with 17 planes arrived as damage spread from Guatemala City north and northwest. An embassy spokesman said many towns were leveled, with relief work under way and bridges lost, halting commerce.

Minority teachers in Frederick County schools inch toward parity
Frederick County Board of Education reported 6.7 percent of public school teachers are minorities. Dr. Donald Koons cited fewer new hires and rising costs as barriers to reaching the 8.2 percent minority student parity. For 1975-76, 3,558 teacher applications were received through Sept. 15, with 89 from minority applicants. The district employed 14 minority teachers, aiming for 15, and outlined several affirmative action steps and remaining unaccomplished items, with a goal to hire 15 minority teachers for 1976-77.
