Mystery of signature solved on 1803 Frederick Town Herald

Linda Parker of New Windsor supplied new details clarifying ownership and survival of the 1803 Frederick Town Herald. The Joseph Delaplane named on the paper is not the ancestor of George B. Delaplaine Jr. and Frances Randall. Two Joseph Delaplanes lived about the same era in Frederick County. The elder (1785–1875) had a cousin (1786–1861). their fathers were brothers, their grandfather Joshua lived in Berks County, PA. The paper traces land transactions to Joseph Jr. (1744–1818), a farmer near Woodsboro, who married Susanna Ott in 1814 and had six sons. He is buried in Haugh’s Church Cemetery at Ladiesburg. His son James Michael (1825–1900) had five children, including a daughter Nannie Doris Delaplane Haugh (1882–1965) buried in Mount Holly Cemetery, Woodsboro. Nannie and her husband ran a store in New Midway. Parker recalls being sent there by her mother. Nannie’s belongings were auctioned after her death. Parker bought the attic contents in 1966, later selling the paper to Mr. and Mrs. Haugh. Parker owns a Baltimore bank note dated about 1843. The Delaplaines of America by Marvin G. Delaplane was a key source.
