Maryland Governor proposes $660 million budget with expanded programs
Governor Tawes presented a $660,505,264 state operating budget to the Maryland Legislature and urged expanded schools and roads programs funded by higher income and highway taxes. The plan includes a $16.2 million per pupil education aid program and a six year roads program with a penny gasoline tax increase and higher automobile titling tax. Tawes said Maryland's economy supports bold action and warned against lagging in a period of prosperity. The budget is balanced without new taxes but requires tax measures to finance the expansions. Carmack’s Market Expands With Parking and Warehouse
Carmack’s Market completes a 150000 dollar expansion doubling store size. The project started in September 1963 and includes a two story warehouse and expanded customer parking now accommodating 85 to 87 cars. Irving Weil of Weil Brothers Inc assisted with private capital totaling about 300000 dollars. The old Maryland Hotel site was razed for the parking and the West Fourth street houses were removed to build the warehouse connected to the store.

Linganore High senior dies from shop class head injury
James Gorsuch Metcalfe aged 17, a Linganore High School senior, died at Washington County Hospital after a wood lathe accident in his shop class. He suffered a forehead injury, underwent brain surgery, and did not regain consciousness. Fire causes $5,000 damage at Thurmont home
About $5,000 in damage was reported from a fire at John Woelfel’s Orchard Drive residence in Thurmont. The Guardian Hose Company arrived around 10 50 a m and determined candles used by Woelfel children started the blaze in a bedroom. The room was destroyed and heat damaged other areas. Firefighters were at the scene about two hours.
