British Battleship Returns From Soviet Service in Scotland
In Scotland in February 1947 the Royal Sovereign, a 29,140 ton British battleship, arrived from the Soviet fleet after five years abroad. Russian sailors stood at stiff attention as the vessel entered harbor to be scrapped, with heavy guns removed and stored. The ship was lent to Russia during the war and returned under a four power naval agreement, with formal handover expected next week. An earlier plan to sail the Forth with a British destroyer failed due to weather and radio silence.
