Eastalco to win permit for waste dump near Adams town

Eastalco Aluminum expected to receive a Maryland Waste Management Administration permit to open a 24 acre nonhazardous waste landfill near its smelting plant in Adamstown. Officials said the permit should be issued by week’s end. Neighbors fear chemical leachate may affect drinking water above a limestone aquifer. Eastalco cites a liner system and monitoring wells to mitigate risk. The site would hold about 10 years of industrial waste and roughly 4500 cubic yards annually. Frederick County officials say it will extend the life of the local dump.
