The 1957 U S traffic death toll reached 38 500 a decline of 3 percent from 39 986 and the lowest mileage death rate on record The National Safety Council called the drop encouraging noting improvements in driver behavior and enforcement. Highway deaths in 1957 fell from 39 628 in 1956, marking a second postwar decrease and the best year since 1934. The 1937 mileage death rate was 5.9, compared with a record low of 6.3 in 1956 and 1954.

Two County Alarms Report Fires in Hyattstown Area
