Stalin's Bid Is Rejected By U S Officials
Washington February 2 The United States rejected Premier Stalin's bid for a peace talk with President Truman. Secretary of State Dean Acheson said Stalin uses peace hopes for political leverage, while the U N security and disarmament issues remain unresolved. Acheson ruled out a direct Stalin Truman meeting and stressed multilateral participation. He noted Stalin could travel to Washington but the deal would not progress without cooperation from Britain and France. Acheson left open no direct talks on core cold war issues. A later note added Stalin’s health prevented travel. The piece also reports a Maryland engineer's suicide and a Baltimore church roof fire.
