Willkie Urges Higher Taxes in War Time Speech
New York report on Wendell Willkie urging taxes be raised beyond current plans to avert national debt. He says the eight billion dollar Treasury proposal is too high for Congress to approve and calls for more than double that in additional taxes while noting postwar tax reform should broaden incomes rather than raise rates. He blames Congress and administration for tax legislation confusion as he speaks at New York Times home front meetings.
