Frederick Mayor questions need for city fire chief

Mayor Hugh V. Gittinger told reporters he believes a dedicated city fire chief is not essential for Frederick’s volunteer fire service. He praised the four fire companies and their leadership, recalling his own firefighting days, and said no recommendation for a city fire chief was expected from last night’s meeting. He favored retaining the air horn for fire alarms while noting air raid drills in the area appear near extinction and the current siren network should suffice.

President May Refuse To Sign New Tax Bill

Washington feb 1 caustic administration criticism of the tax bill nearing final approval by Congress and the history of what happened to another tax bill President Roosevelt didn't like lent support tonight to the belief that the President may refuse to sign the 2300000000 measure. There was little expectation of an outright veto predictions running toward Roosevelt letting the act become law without his name on it. House and Senate conferees removed most provisions prompting Morgenthau to call it worse than no tax bill at all but it still falls short of administration revenue needs by over eight billion dollars and contains objections including ending the war contracts renegotiation act at year end and a social security levy freeze on both sides of the payroll.
