Snow and fog hit the area overnight and into the morning, with 0.75 inch measured locally. State Police activated the snow emergency plan at midnight and tires or chains rule lifted at 8 am. No serious accidents reported as temps rise and roads improve, with sun and warmer weather forecast for Sunday.
An Ellicott City man Frank Robert King 23 was charged with four motor vehicle violations after a 3:15 a.m. arrest on East Patrick street by Officer Reed T. Thompson. King faced driving without a registration card license driving the wrong way on a one way street and running a red light with 67 collateral. William H. Bordenaire 25 of Washington was charged with driving the wrong way on a one way street after a 4:20 a.m. stop on South Market street by Sgt J. Frank Main with 13 collateral. Typhoon reported by London AP notes hundreds of ships caught in a Japan Sea storm per Moscow Radio.
Congressman Charles McC Mathias Jr released a statement on Maryland redistricting and will meet Governor Tawes and state officials Sunday at 12 30 p.m. to press for fair representation and statutory standards. He warns delays shift responsibility to the state and supports a special session if needed.
Frederick Mayor E Paul Magaha says the new zoning ordinance updates the 1947 rules to align with changing social and economic conditions. It requires off street parking for nearly all new business and industrial sites, with a key exception for small B-2 downtown stores. The measure details parking ratios by use and notes parking needs for North Market Street and downtown blocks. Local officials have studied lot enlargements behind City Hall Winchester Hall and South Market East Patrick streets and consider private lots and a parking authority as possible fixes.

The Community Association of Sabillasville writes Gov Tawes opposing moving 50 delinquents to Victor Cullen State Hospital. Francis Manahan says the plan hurts Western Maryland, warns of costs to convert the hospital and enlarge facilities, and questions timing ahead of legislative study. Senator Derry and others have delayed the transfer until April.
Jean Saubert of Lakeview Oregon clinches a bronze medal after a jury clears a possible gate violation on her second run. The United States earns its first medal of the ninth Winter Games as Lidia Skoblikova and the Soviet team dominate speed skating and cross country events. Christine and Marielle Goitschel lead the French sweep behind Saubert in the 10 kilometer course.
City Police reports two weather related crashes overnight and this morning. A 12 12 a m collision on East South street involved Paul J Weddle and his wife Edna V Weddle with minor injuries and $200 vehicle damage to a 1960 Ford. A second incident on Lee Place caused $375 in vehicle damage to a Dewey R Cline owned 1959 Ford and $275 to a 1961 Dodge driven by Gerald E McNitt Jr. No charges were filed.
Randallstown Md AP The Maryland Farm Bureau endorses a one half per cent increase in the state income tax not the proposed one per cent rise by Gov Tawes. Bureau president Noah E Kefauver Jr says if cit is one per cent then at least half of the funds should return to counties for education. The group also supports legislation to legalize prayers in public schools.
John H. Millard of Deer Spring road Braddock Heights reported four robins in his yard Friday afternoon. He described them as large and red breasted as any to see.
Frederick woman Vanda Ltyles aged 30 was arrested with two men Harvey Robinson 47 Arnold Bacon 37 in a Catonsville lottery raid by Baltimore County police Friday afternoon. Three months of surveillance led to a basement door raid at a house on Leslie Avenue. Captain Fred Long oversaw the operation as pencils pads records and six adding machines were seized. All three held on 2500 bond each pending grand jury action per Frank Newell III state attorney.
A Mt. Airy volunteer responding to an accident on Woodbine Winfield road near Lisbon at 2 10 a m fell suffering a compound leg fracture. James Moxley of Mt Airy was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital by Damascus Fire Company Ambulance. A passenger, Richard Kursevich of Woodbine, suffered severe lacerations and was treated at Carroll County General Hospital. A second Mt Airy ambulance assisted a Greyhound bus crash on U S 40 near Ridgeville with minor injuries to two passengers. No charges were filed.
A morning raid by state and county authorities targeted 17 taverns and restaurants with warrants for operators of gambling devices. Nine sites were in the city, the rest in the county, with arrests expected and charges possibly including keeping or managing a gaming table for profits. Confiscated machines will be stored at City Police Headquarters as about 30 officers took part under state supervision.
In Baltimore the 92 year old Ford's Theatre closes tonight as the venue bows out for a parking lot. The farewell features the road company of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. About 1 800 people expected to attend. Mayor McKeldin cites official tears. Ford's opened Oct 3 1871 with Shakespeare's As You Like It starring James W Wallack.
A Norwegian coastal station reported the Dutch coastal freighter Titan sinking in the North Sea off Norway's southwest coast as a storm raged. The crew took to lifeboats and the station did not know how many people were aboard.
Pasadena report says Ranger 6 with an image camera heads for the moon to target Mare Tranquillitatis. If successful, it should strike the lunar surface at 4 24 a m EST Sunday after a Cape Kennedy launch and midflight course correction. Fire at Westinghouse Defense Center at Friendship International Airport follows the space event.
Frederick residents will view a James Pearl mural, Frederick County’s entry in the New York World's Fair, in Kemp's window from Monday to next Saturday February 10. The display includes three solid gold Francis Scott Key Memorial Medals to leaders and a 100000th medal, with sale of FSK medals for the Maryland Pavilion and a time capsule planned for 2061.
