Thurmont plant closing opens new doors for town
Thurmont faced mass layoff when Claire Manufacturing Co. shut after 53 years, with 250 to 300 workers affected. Local leaders credit Job Training Agency and Frederick County Board of Education for retraining efforts, enabling many to gain new skills and diplomas. The year also saw growth controls on annexations, plans for vacant land development, and improvements to Colorfest logistics. Police reported six vehicles seized in drug operations, netting about $2,095 in town revenue, while overall crime held steady except for reduced drug arrests from 1989 to 1990.
