Dr. Fred Brown Leaves MSDE for National Education Post
Dr. Fred Brown, associate state superintendent in Maryland’s education department, moves from State service to lead five CCSO special projects as Director of Special Projects. He reports to Dr. Byron W. Hansford and coordinates work across 50 states plus territories. Brown’s long career spans Brunswick High, Frederck County, Charles County, Montgomery County, and 11 years as Associate State Superintendent. He holds a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia, and resides in Yamsville with his wife Jean Hastings and two sons Eric and Richard.

Shamrock Majorettes Award Winners at Christmas Banquet
The Shamrock Majorettes held the Award and Christmas banquet on December 15 at the Junior Fire Company, announcing 1977 officers. The corps, with 65 marching members, earned four Grand Champion trophies along with multiple first to sixth place finishes and four cash prizes. Trophies, perfect attendance honors, and leadership awards were presented to members, leaders, and 21 marching parents. The corps named 1977 officers and invited new members to join at Yellow Springs School on Monday nights.

Clements Elected Leader of Catoctones in 1977
Gene Clements elected president of the Catectones Frederick Chapter of P E B S Q5 A. Newly elected officers include Paul Roney as secretary, George Schmersahl as administrative VP, Phil Rhoderick program VP, and Gene Thomas treasurer with Wilbur Sparks as director. Veterans Chuck Hurd and Tony DeRosa also serve as directors. Clements, a charter member since 1967, has led musical groups and shows, now directing the Heart of Maryland Chapter of Sweet Adelines and singing bass with the Courthouse Square Quartet. The 1977 board aims for a strong year with new leadership and Silliman’s musical direction.

Christmas Pack Meeting Brings Santa Visitor to Cub Scouts
Cub Scout Pack 269 held a December meeting at the Browningsville hall where Santa arrived during a brief blackout. He distributed Pinewood Derby kits as plans for upcoming trips were announced. Awards included Silver Hammer for Craftsmen Badge recipients and multiple Silver Arrows for Bruce Anderson, John Woods, and Jonn Keeney. The next meeting is set for January 27 with a Pinewood Derby race.
