A winter storm warning from the weather bureau predicts up to eight inches of snow in Frederick County and much of the region. Snow expected to start around noon, continue through the night, tapering Friday. Temperatures stay in the 30s with overnight lows in the teens, and a cold New Year expected as icy conditions persist.
Barbara Laughlin warns that skiing can be fun yet hazardous and urges beginners to take lessons or learn from experts. She stresses warming up, staying in control, using ski bindings and safety straps, yelling when a ski is coming, and learning to board lifts safely.
On January 6 the city of Frederick will revive the post holiday custom of burning greens in a bonfire at Husky Park behind the fairgrounds. Mayor E Paul Magaha announced the ceremony citing strong public demand. Lawrence E Nelson organizes the event with Rev Thomas J Brunkow representing the churches.
Frederick County Commissioners may withdraw a request to delay the district court system, meeting in Annapolis with Gov. Mandel. The state will fund most costs except new personnel, but delays depend on a countywide decision, with July 5 as the start date if not delayed.

The Soviet Supreme Court cut the deaths of Edward Kuznetsov and Mark Dymshuts to 15 years in a labor camp in the Leningrad hijacking case. It also shortened terms for three others while upholding the rest, drawing Western protests and appeals for clemency.
Madrid reports that Generalissimo Francisco Franco commuted the death sentences of six Basque nationalists to 30 years in prison, sparking celebrations in northern Spain. The men, condemned for murder of a political police chief, had faced double death sentences for some counts amid international pressure.
Rescue teams in Hyden Kentucky recovered the 36th victim of a Finley Coal mine blast as crews search for two more presumed entombed. About 99 workers were in the mine when the blast struck. one survivor remained hospitalized with minor injuries. Officials cited possible dynamite use or a faulty electrical cable as causes. The mine had prior federal safety violations including an imminent danger order for loose coal and dust, though operations resumed after corrections.
Saigon reports New Year cease-fire observed by allied forces with 24 hours of halt while casualties rise on both sides. U S command says 41 Americans killed, 141 wounded, American totals include spillover from prior week. Viet Cong announce 72 hour cease-fire yet launch a lightning attack near Saigon killing 19. Local self defense force member abducted.
Frederick physicians note rising interest in sterilization as a practical permanent birth control amid broader population concerns. Dr. Robert Crouch cites about 1,500 vasectomies over 14 years and growing private demand, while Frederick Memorial Hospital reports no surge, performing about 40-60 sterilizations annually.
