Eight Paintings Stolen From Dulwich Gallery in London

Thieves broke into Dulwich Art Gallery overnight and made off with eight paintings including three Rembrandts and three Rubens. Value estimated at 1.0 to 1.5 million pounds, about 2.8 to 4.2 million dollars. Victims include Elsheimer and Gerrard Dou works. Police say entry was through a door panel. one thief described as small crept through the hole. Gallery holds about 300 works. theft ranked among Britain’s biggest art heists.

House Unit Ends Probe of Powell

A House subcommittee has wrapped up its investigation of Rep. Adam Clayton Powell and will submit recommendations to the House Administration Committee. Rep. Wayne J. Hays said the panel cannot act against Powell and aims to propose general procedures for travel and payroll expenses. Findings include more than 75 airline trips charged as official travel for Powell aides but paid by someone else. Hays also suggested removing Powell's wife from the payroll at $20,500 a year on her husband's staff.

Amid a two day ceasefire in South Vietnam, allied and Communist forces exchanged fire. One battalion size Communist attack near Kontum City and nearly 40 lesser assaults were reported. US forces landed troops off Vung Tau as peace efforts shift to negotiations with Britain and the United Nations urging a settlement.

Britain Seeks Talks On End To Vietnam War

Britain urged an urgent meeting of the United States South Vietnam and North Vietnam to discuss ending the Vietnam War. Four Frederick teens reported missing after overnight disappearance

Four teenagers David Julien McDonald Junior Tommy Martin Susie Keyser and Susie Cromwell were reported missing after failing to return home last night. They were last seen in a 1957 blue two tone Chevrolet driven by McDonald. State and city police searched parks but had no clues as of press time. Police urged anyone with information to contact authorities.

Legislator Opposes Poland Debt Easing Aide Deal

Coast Guard Rescues Two Ships In Atlantic

The Coast Guard cut ters Vigilant reached a Liberian freighter with 29 Greek crewmen, 460 miles east southeast of New York, while cutter Tamaroa took in tow a battered 70 foot yawl with five survivors after 15 harrowing hours at sea. The Georgia freighter, hatch blown, water in hold, listed but making five knots as a tug and life gear were en route. No injuries reported among the Greek crew. weather eased but winds hit 28 knots with 14 foot swells and nine mile visibility. A C130 dropped life rafts if needed and two other ships were released from rescue efforts.

Red China announced it has succeeded in producing guided nuclear weapons in a brief dispatch. Tokyo observers doubt a full arsenal claim, noting only a single sentence in a long report and suggesting limited progress rather than a fleet of nuclear tipped missiles.
