Hungary Paper Claims Airmen Search Was Fake
Szabad Nep, Hungary's Communist Party newspaper, claimed the U S government knew on November 19 the plane landed in Hungary and that the ensuing air search was a sham. It cited Washington closing Hungarian consulates and banning American travel as retaliation for the crew’s court conviction and fines. The four airmen were released after the U S paid $120,000. the paper argued the fliers admitted radio contact with Frankfurt and asserted Hungary’s right to detain them. It also noted the confiscated plane and tensions over espionage charges against American businessman Rob ert Voreler.
