Frederick County commissioners set the 1935 tax rate at 95 cents per $100 of assessed value, an increase of five cents over 1934. They announced the budget details would be released early in the new year, noting unpaid taxes and collected sums that shaped the financial outlook.
Hanson G. Cashell, longtime president, declines another term. Martin H insinger of the Silver Spring Ma onic Lodge is elected president. Cashell named president emeritus and resigns as district inspector. Garland W. Wolfe becomes vice president and Rowan F. Erb re-elected secretary treasurer. Banquet in Rockville features Dashell as toastmaster.
The newspaper will not publish on New Year’s Day. Business and editorial offices reopen after five o’clock Tuesday evening.
A look back at 1934 in Frederick notes a year of wide temperature swings from 12 degrees below zero to 104 degrees above, with the wettest month on record in September and an overall rainfall exceeding normals. The last Peoples Court session of 1934, led by Justice Guy K. Matter, dismissed charges of drunken and reckless driving against Paul Houck of East Sixth Street after witnesses testified he may not have been drunk. Houck, employed at the Washington Navy Yard, denied intoxication the night of December 23 on Walkersville road. Prosecution by Sergt. D. R. Peterson failed to prove guilt. A separate non support case against John Schill was held open pending payment details. Frederick county veterans hurry to file final applications for the World War adjusted service certificates known as the Horus. Applications must reach Washington by midnight January 2. Army applicants go to the Adjutant General, Navy or Coast Guard to the Bureau of Navigation, Marines to the Adjusted Compensation Branch. The county list shows 2062 veterans with 65 deceased. Two last applicants, Mark Waters and Arthur Naylor, filed Saturday at Red Cross headquarters after hearing of the deadline. A new bonus bill is expected in Congress to supplement prior payments, with Frederick county veterans projected at about 935000 and Montgomery county at about 845000.
Washington AP Rush D Holt 29 year old Senator elect from West Virginia will not be sworn in until his 30th birthday June 19. Married 62 years Mr and Mrs Saylor Bohn of Frederick now Baltimore celebrated their sixty second wedding anniversary December 23 at the home of their daughter Mrs Millard Standfort Whitehall. Attendees included family and local residents as the couple mark a long life together.
The infant son of Mr and Mrs Richard Brachey Jr was riding in a carriage when a runaway wheel from James L Crummitts auto detached and struck the carriage in front of the Fair Grounds. The baby suffered a minor head injury but was treated and released. Crummitt was cleared of fault by Officer George Hoffman.
Rockville AP Walter W Dawson and his cousin Thomas L Dawson both Rockville attorneys announced they would fill the Maryland Secretary of State post with Walter taking the job. Walter has served in the House of Delegates since 1930 and ran for State's Attorney, losing by 46 votes.
Mrs Vivian Mathis, one of eight defendants in the Union Station massacre, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy count in federal court. Jurors were chosen as the government prepares to try the remaining defendants. The other two counts against her were dismissed and sentencing will wait until all trials finish.
On New York markets year end, stocks firmed slightly but activity stayed quiet while optimism persisted. Commodities held steady with firming staples and grains easing. cotton stayed narrow, and bond trading was quiet as gold currencies recovered. Westminster notes a state Democratic committee recommendation to appoint enumerators for the Federal Farm Census listing several named candidates across Carroll County.
Morning reports say repairs after the fire at the North Market Street school will allow resumption of all classes Wednesday morning. If plaster is not dry in the fifth grade room, pupils may transfer to Church Street school briefly. Police investigation continues with no pupil or external connection suspected. Total damage slightly over 2800 dollars, largely to the building, with insurance covering most losses. Contractors began repairs within an hour of the fire.
Parsons Newman, Frederick attorney, was installed as president of the local Kiwanis Club in the Blue and Grey room of the Francis Scott Key Hotel today. Rescuers from Hoffmeister New York and others reached the four men stranded after a wrecked American Airlines plane in heavy snow. One man injured, another aided back toward civilization as search parties persevered through minus 20 degree weather and three feet of snow.

John Paul Chase, linked to Baby Face Nelson, is arrested in California and brought to Chicago. Federal agents seized him at Oak Park as the Dillinger syndicate, nearly wiped out by police and vigilante actions, faces possible execution if convicted.
The 1935 News-Post Almanac and Year Book is issued with 104 pages of facts on Frederick city and county. It covers election figures, Prohibition and intoxicants referenda, a housing survey, Federal relief data, and a directory of officials. The book features Miss Helen Smith’s cover art and Andy Gump as traffic manager. 5000 copies printed, offered free to subscribers at the office, with a five cent charge for stand copies.
President Roosevelt rejects push to immediately cash bonus certificates saying advocates seek to spur business and shows veterans may not fully understand the issue. He notes the face value plus 25 percent with 4 percent interest over 20 years and reports most veterans have borrowed against certificates. National Commander Belgrano declines comment as the American Legion campaigns for certificate discharge by Congress.
Chestertown, Dec. 31 (AP) Johni Newcoms, 58, a Kent county farmer and father of several children, is jailed in default $10,000 bond on a charge of molesting a seven year old girl. Sheriff John N. Bennett said the charge is molesting a child under 14. Magistrate William A. Wheatley set the bond. The girl is Helen Beck, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Beck of Rock Hall. The incident, the Sheriff said, occurred Friday near Rock Hall.
