Farm Home Ripped By Explosion Near Emmitsburg
Mrs. Charles Seiss, 78, narrowly escaped death when a gas explosion ripped her two story home about three miles south of Emmitsburg causing about 2500 dollars in damage. Fire Chief John Hollinger said she turned on a gas range for breakfast and fainted, allowing gas to fill the house until a spark from a wood range caused the blast. Downstairs windows and doors were blown out, a ceiling section fell, and a first floor mixture of furniture and joists were upset. A upstairs visitor, Virginia Kaas, slept through the blast unharmed. Seiss was treated for a head cut and shock after being moved to a neighbor’s house.
