Dutch plan defies UN in ceasefire bid over Java Sumatra
United Nations heard the Netherlands say it would end fighting in Java by midnight New Year with a separate halt in Sumatra two or three days later. Delegates, including Philip Jessup, called the move defiant. Van Royen claimed Java hostilities would end by Dec 31 and Sumatra by Jan 2 or 3 while noting measures against troublemakers and aid to the needy. Prime Minister William Drees’ Indonesia visit was cited as a sign the Dutch take the council’s resolution seriously.
