Paris AP report notes Jeanne Calment now 120, the oldest person, while Andre Raffray died at 77 after paying 184000 over 30 years for a life estate in Arles apartment he never owned. The en viager arrangement pays the owner monthly until death, after which the buyer gets the property. Calment, who once rode a bike at 100, recalls Van Gogh and lived through 17 presidents.

Pittsburgh officers to stand trial in Gammage case

Three white officers face involuntary manslaughter charges in the October traffic stop death of Jonny Gammage, a cousin of Steelers player Ray Sears. Two Men Charged Over Reno IRS Bomb Plot

In Reno Nevada two men Joseph Martin Bailie age 40 and Ellis Edward Hurst age 52 were charged with attempted destruction of a government building and use of a destructive device. Bailie allegedly opposed the IRS after wage garnishment and enlisted Hurst who helped move the 30 gallon drum bomb found outside the IRS building. Both men were arrested in Gardnerville and about 60 federal workers were evacuated.

Human error cited in Cali crash probe

In the December 20 crash near Cali, Colombia that killed 160, pilots talked about their jobs before impact. Data from two black boxes show no terrorism or mechanical failure. Alarms indicated the plane was too low. speed brakes remained deployed, hindering ascent. American Airlines flagged human error as a factor.

US forces assemble pontoon bridge to Bosnia gateway

In snow and flood, American engineers and pilots began building a floating pontoon bridge over the Sava at the Croatia Bosnia border to move troops and materiel toward Tuzla. Major General Nash says the bridge should be usable by Saturday as US units cross into Bosnia. The effort follows flood damage and marks a key step in resuming transit for the 20,000 U S troops.
