London dispatch notes continued fighting on multiple fronts. German assaults near Ypres and in northern France clash with Allied counterattacks supported by British naval bombardment. French troops claim gains in the Argonne and Meuse heights while Metz forts endure bombardment and German attempts to disrupt eastern communications face repulse.
Regarded as the father of the German Army Count von Haeseler led forces during heavy artillery fighting near Rheims and Perthes. German counterattacks west of Perthes failed while Allied advances along the Meuse made light progress. Enemy bombardments hit St Die disrupting rail service but no interruption. In upper Alanco northeast of Steinbach a German counterattack was repulsed. Western theater saw renewed enemy attacks on Nieuport, Westende suffers minor casualties, St Georga hamlet attack failed. South of Ypres, trench captured. several prisoner gains. Attacks northwest of Arras repelled. Verdun area attacks unsuccessful. height west of Senheim held after Sunday fight.
The state railroad commission ordered a 40 cent per ton cut for anthracite freight to Philadelphia, effective Jan. 12, with the Pennsylvania Railroad and Philadelphia & Reading Railway to file new tariffs. Rail officials offered no comment. An influential coal exchange member welcomed the order but said the impact awaits implementation.
Amsterdam reports, per Berlin dispatch, total German war losses to date at about 2.1 million. Casualty lists 101 to 108 name 38,883 Prussian officers and men killed wounded or missing. Prussian losses total 753,202 with Bavarians added, including 250,000 killed 850,008 wounded and 400,000 missing. Aggregate figures cover Prussians Bavarians Saxons and Württemberg troops.
Petrograd reports Russian forces withdraw eastward after repelling Austrian attempts to split their Galicia front. Russians retook Tuchow and held a 20 mile strip along the Biala river, claiming Boehm-Ermolli’s Austrian army in retreat while Italian or Balkan fronts show limited action.
In Pittsburgh on December 23 orders for 65,000 tons of high carbonized steel rounds surface, with 10,000 tons bound for France and 15,000 tons for Russia. Previously 26,000 tons of the same steel grade used in shell making were shipped to Europe. Over the last two months about $6,000,000 worth of trenching tools galvanized sheets wire and projectile steel have been bought for the European belligerents.
