All Night Strut revival dazzles Washington with forties flair
Ed Campbell Ford presents a sizzling All Night Strut featuring Jo Sichel Davis and Barry Lee. Fran Charmas directs a contemporary opera like homage with no dialogue, a song and dance revue built on jazz standards and ink spots. The ensemble shines in One O’Clock Jump and Moonlight Serenade with Beards Eight to the Bar. Strong performances by Elia Fitzgerald, Barbara Hellman, Michael Davis, Jeff Mugradey, Eric Riley, Nedra Dixon and others illuminate Broadway era nostalgia with vivid lighting by Barry Arnold and sharp costumes by Carol Oditz. The production travels Harlem to the El Morocco and the Great White Way, delivering a high energy, moving tribute to midcentury showmanship.

Glass from rubbish could become bricks and roads
Research at the University of San Diego led by Dr. Donald B. Peterson shows ground glass from municipal waste can be separated by froth flotation and melted into new glass or used to make an asphalt substitute called glassphast. The work, under the National Center for Resources Recovery, aims to produce ecofriendly cullet for containers, bricks, or paving, with a pilot plant soon capable of 1.25 tons per hour.

Joy of stitching needlepainting by Cass Hedlund of Dover Mass
Cass Hedlund of Dover Massachusetts is renowned for needlepainting nail hangings and painted look pictures created with needle and yarn. The craft traces to Victorian mourning pictures with silk backgrounds and colorwashed edges and requires control, texture and color flow. Advanced students begin with a single flower then landscape, using an outline sketch and multiple colors, often dyeing yarns with tea or coffee for color harmony.
