Holiday Mail Sets New Record at Frederick Office
A record 6,996,986 pieces of holiday mail were handled in Frederick from December 1 to 24, a 14.8 percent rise from 1965. Outgoing mail led gains, with 4,433,007 pieces, up 21.4 percent against last year. incoming mail rose to 2,562,961. Postmaster James A. Grove noted Sunday New Year’s Day shifts a day, no rural or city deliveries, but box mail remains, and holiday pickup is in effect. Sen. Brewster urged immediate action on the $610,000 Frederick Post Office upgrade, criticizing repeated stalls since May 1965.

A strong earthquake hit northern Chile early today tearing through Taltal destroying about half its houses and buildings. One child died from a falling wall and three others were injured while water mains ruptured and power lines fell. Army and police units were mobilized. Bids Sought for I-70 Frederick Freeway Projects

Mass Truck Train Crash in Everett Kills 12
A Boston & Maine one car diesel passenger train collided with a stalled fuel oil truck at a street crossing in Everett Massachusetts. Twelve people died and up to 35 aboard were feared dead or injured as flames engulfed both vehicles. Firefighters faced brutal conditions to free trapped passengers.
