McKeldin Sees No Tax Boost for Maryland

Maryland Governor-elect McKeldin says there will be no tax increase, citing current budget lines. A Board of Estimates forecast shows higher general fund revenues over 18 months, potentially easing the deficit and delaying department demands. He plans government reorganization, scrutinizes the Roads Commission program, and favors no permanent consultants except for extraordinary needs.

McKeldin Links Road Plan Costs and Engineer Choice

Governor McKeldin warned that a vast long range road and bridge program may be unworkable if federal rules stay tight. He cited cost estimates from 200 million to 800 million, noted rising debt and upcoming bond payments of 56 million, and endorsed Smith as successor to engineer Funk. Funk resigned recently and Lane will name a new engineer before December 30 to serve out Funk's term. Smith, former Baltimore City chief engineer, would command a likely higher salary than current Baltimore County public works chief.
