West Point hazing inquiry draws large crowd and witnesses
The military court of Inquiry at West Point yesterday drew unusually large crowds for the morning and afternoon sessions. Horace C. Benz of Buffalo and P.O. Philips of East Cleveland testified. Phillips said he never held congressman status. Testimony focused on Oscar L. Booz, a Bristol, Pennsylvania cadet who died recently, with witnesses accusing him of cowardice and untruthfulness. Booz’s brother contested these claims and defended Booz’s intellect and character. Philips sought to show he did not visit the academy in 1898 to shield his son from hazing and judged Booz unfit for army officer material.
