Fragmentary ad notes Croft's Worm Confections claimed to destroy worms and act as a tonic for delicate children. It mentions Dr Schley's Family Cough Syrup and Bebley's Family Syrup as cures for coughs and colds, sold by Steiner Brothers, with vague promotional phrases and misspelled lines.
A Montana dispatch reports a snow slide near Montezuma on Monday swept three miners, John Headstrom, John Ahlstrom, and John Ling, half a mile down the mountain. Ahlstrom and Ling were found yesterday badly frozen and may die. Headstrom is missing and presumed killed.
New Haven Yale College Prof Marsh reports the strange find in the sound is the skull of a large dolphin not previously seen in Long Island Sound. Examination leaves uncertainty if it matches gulf stream species. Four killed and wounded in Galveston rail crash near Clear Creek. A contractor FE Lewis injured, Henry Bentley and another worker fatally crushed.
Gen Grant in New York slips on ice while leaving home. He sustains a severe shock and a serious thigh injury. Frederick Grant reports surgeons cannot determine if the injury is dangerous. limb likely paralyzed for the time being.
Intelligence reports the arrival at Oporto Portugal of fifty three men from the Belgian steamship Plantyn which sailed from New York on November eleven and had been missing. They were taken to Oporto aboard the British brig G D T which departed Pasbepiae November twenty two for Oporto. The rescued men were pulled from the steamer G D T.
A Paris dispatch reports the government telegraphed Admiral Courbet urging rapid and prudent follow up of his Sontay victory. He is expected to strike at Hong Hoa about twenty miles above Sontay before moving on Bach Ninh with his forces.
Brussels reports King Leopold is indisposed and will not host the usual New Year reception, with officials announcing his unavailability for the holiday event.
London dispatch dated December 18 reports that Egyptian rebels menace Riwaidah and that an Egyptian gunboat will embark the garrison and inhabitants of the place.
Paris reports the death of Jean Baptiste Ciceron Luseueur, a noted architect born in 1794. He authored several works on architecture and chronology, leaving a significant footprint in architectural history.
Fire at Ward & Co oil store 172 Front Street renewed this morning. The rear of the building lit up as floors collapsed trapping stock in the cellar. The lake of oil reached the sidewalk, with extensive losses and $15,500 insurance. No. 174 Front Street damaged by smoke and water. gutted inside. Origin undetermined, heat from a stove suspected to have ignited the oil.
While excavating a vacant Germantown lot on Adams street workers uncovered a vast nest of garter snakes. A yard-long specimen wrapped around a cartman’s leg, many were torpid. over two days 450 snakes were taken and killed, with hundreds more found in new nests.

Beverly West Virginia reports a brutal killings mystery near Rich Mountain. Mrs Elizabeth Somerfield and two children were slain likely on Sunday the 16th and their house burned, bodies burned in the ruins. A mail carrier found the mutilated remains and alerted authorities. A similar year old crime in the same area drew comment. Also noted is the death of Mattie Eddy known as Kit the Tramp a noted female printer in Cleveland Ohio at age thirty two.
A 1797 incident in Nelson County Kentucky recounts John Merrill wounded when seven Indians attacked their cabin. His wife sets a fearless example, driving off four assailants with an axe after catching them on the roof and flooding the fire with feather bed flames. One attacker escapes, badly wounded.
