Ladd Receives Distinguished Service Cross for Hungnam Heroism
First Lieutenant James K. Ladd of 300 Rockwell Terrace received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in Korea. The award, announced from the Hungnam perimeter December 24, honors his actions Dec 13 at Chosin Reservoir, where he reorganized a fallen platoon, directed evacuees, and personally fought off enemy fire, including destroying two machine guns and three mortars. General Almond presented the medal shortly before Hungnam’s final withdrawal. Ladd, 27, a West Point graduate (1946), is the son of Brig. Gen. Jesse A. Ladd of Palo Alto. His wife is Margaret E. Ladd, daughter of Col. Harrison McAlpine of Frederick. Both regiments are part of the 3d Infantry Division, the last UN unit to leave Hungnam.
