Holiday road toll climbs as Christmas travel peaks

The Associated Press reports traffic deaths rising during the Christmas holiday period. By 10 a.m. EST 145 people had died in crashes since the monitoring began at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with NSC projecting 440 to 500 fatalities overall in the four day span.

Ice storm disrupts Frederick County roads and power

An Ice storm hit Frederick County on Christmas Eve bringing slick roads and scattered power outages. The Catoctin Furnace Lewistown area lost power from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. while Thurmont New Midway Kenn Road and areas east of Frederick also reported outages. Potomac Edison and C&P Telephone reported outages with ice weighing down branches that felled lines. Temperatures rose to 34 and fell to 26 with .55 inches of precipitation. State Police logged several accidents including one fatal.

Bank agencies accused of wasting tax dollars

In a GAO report cited by Sen. William Proxmire the Federal Reserve Board the office of the comptroller of the currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp are charged with wasteful lavish spending. The report details high costs for office space travel and furniture, noting per employee figures well above comparable agencies. Proxmire says consolidation is needed as the three agencies spend about 137 million yearly outside regular budget control.

Police seek identity of gun victim in Md field

State police continue investigations into a youth found dead in a field off Md 75. Autopsy indicates a black male 16 to 19 years old was shot once in the chest. Clothing and time of death await lab reports. Victim described as about 5 ft 10 in, 130 pounds with a 3 inch scar on right arm.
