Farm Output Increases but World Needs Grow
A 1963 Agricultural index shows world farm output up about 1 percent from 1962, while population rose 2 percent. Canada and the United States posted gains, Europe faced drought and cold, and the Soviet bloc lagged. Experts warn shortages loom as vast populations outpace output. Japan offers a model with high yields and strong irrigation. The report also notes a Mexican agrarian reform plan redistributing 8.75 million acres to about 270,000 landless farmers next year.
