Lakonia Fire Disaster Aboard Greek Liner Captures Rescue Drama

The 20214 ton Lakonia departed Southampton Dec 18 for a Madeira Christmas cruise with 661 passengers and 377 crew. A fire broke out after 11:30 p.m. Dec 20, trapping many on board. The Salta rescued 475 survivors while 696 people were saved and 36 were still missing, with conflicting reports on totals.

Bank Robbery in Reisterstown Leaves $19 900 Stolen

A lone gunman robbed the Union Trust Company branch on Main Street Reisterstown Christmas Eve taking 19 144 in three bags including a green paper sack. Manager Oscar Staley, a Frederick native, reported the incident to police and the FBI. no suspects yet.
