Downtown Frederick will hear the Trinity Chapel chimes in the Evangelical Reformed Church United Church of Christ annual Christmas Eve concert led by George T. Schroeder. Snowchains slowed traffic on highways from the Great Lakes to New England and rain and snow dampened roads in the Pacific Northwest today as travelers began the long Christmas weekend. The National Safety Council estimated between 360 and 360 deaths on the roads from 6 p.m. Thursday to midnight Sunday. Beef price rise offsets pork price drop in November
Government figures show beef prices paid by shoppers rose 1.6 percent in November while pork costs fell sharply for the fourth straight month. Beef averaged about $1.36 per pound on an alient basis, up from October, as cattle slaughter and later herd reductions shift supply. Pork averaged just over $1.16 per pound, the lowest since April 1975, down seven percent from October. The report notes cattle producers captured a larger share of the beef dollar, with middlemen taking less.
