Holiday rush continues as shoppers crowd stores and mail bags bulge. Police and Salvation Army distribute food baskets to dozens of city and county families. Christmas Eve plans include plant holidays, church services, and carolers as many businesses close for a broader holiday.
Seven men posted bond within 24 hours after arrest by State Police on disturbance charges in the western county. Burkittsville residents Floyd Mentzer Melvin Mentzer Bene Fry and John Ramsburg each posted 50 bond for drunkenness and disorderly conduct following an incident at Huffer Ahalt’s store. Others from Mt Philip near Jefferson and Seat Pleasant posted 15 80 or 50 on similar charges. Hearings set for next week in Brunswick.
Strasburg Virginia December 24 Charles Platt owner and manager of the Strasburg silk mill was slugged and robbed of about 2500 early today. He was bound after being struck several times with a weapon and was taken to Winchester Memorial Hospital where he was conscious and resting. The attacker fled with 2060 of company funds plus 506 in cash and Platts wallet.
The News will not be published on Christmas Day. The business office will be closed the entire day while the editorial office remains open after 4 p.m.

Frederick county supervisor of assessments A Lemar Barrick said no action will be taken until the Tax Commission’s ruling on 16 fraternal and benevolent associations in Allegany county is fully reviewed. He noted there are no plans to assess such properties for 1948, tax-exempt status remains, and any local effort would require notices and hearings.
