Counterfeiting Ring Foiled In Express Money Orders
Federal agents report a major counterfeit scheme targeting American Express money orders of 50 and 100 dollars. Giles M. Ranney, an engraver from New York, is jailed in Freehold New Jersey with James Watson and Walter Nolan held in Cincinnati after a months long pursuit. The trio allegedly flooded merchants and banks with bogus orders, leading to about 800 dollars in fake orders in New York and a broader manhunt spanning Asbury Park, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Birmingham, and New Orleans. Officials say the gang planned more, with 10,000 worth in bogus orders seized and a confession tying one note drop into the Hudson. American Railway Express asserts this is the first successful counterfeiting of its money orders in 30 years.
