In the first half, trading was light and money rates eased after opening. Joans opened and extended ahead of Christmas at 5.5 percent, later reducing to 5 percent. Popular Steels and Equipments were unchanged. By noon, a moderate rally followed Mexican Petroleum buying, as shorts covered.
Chicago reports Wilbur Glenn Voliva of Zion, Illinois, issues a decree ending Santa Claus and the Kris Kringle myth for Zion children. He proclaims the myth gone and gifts will be sent from above, distributed by parents, while Bethlehem of Christmas rituals fades from local practice.
President Harding has signed the Russian Relief Bill which provides 20 million dollars to be expended under the American Relief Administration. The funds are available immediately and to be administered under ARA supervision.
December 23 report from the Weather Bureau says warmer weather and rain today may delay snow in the eastern section, with a likelihood of more snow south of the Mississippi. It will be colder on Christmas Day.
The mutilated body of 5 year old Tessie Rucharski, who vanished from the Melliere Hotel, was found in a suitcase at Hotel Albany. Police say she entered the hotel with George Garyis, 45, who claimed she was his granddaughter and left a short time later. An autopsy indicated strangulation with bed sheet. Father is under indictment in a separate attack case. Michael Roman and Samuel Pesky of Bellmore held as material witnesses.
Algona, Pa December 23. Fire of unknown origin at Madera north of here today destroyed three buildings in the heart of the town, causing property damage estimated at 100000 dollars.
A fire at the Savings Bank Building in Ithaca caused about 300000 dollars in damage. The blaze began on the fourth floor of the Masonic Temple and ruined Masonic regalia and paraphernalia valued near 100000 dollars.

Sam McVey a negro heavyweight boxer born in California in 1885 died in a New York hospital from pneumonia. He stood nearly six feet tall at 200 pounds and was known for heavy punching power and resilience. He first rose as a contender in 1903 facing Jack Johnson in two 20 round fights. Later he fought many negro contenders and white heavies. A West Dallas widow notes she canceled her engagement because her fiancé Cobb was not worth shucks.
