Lost arts of ancient craft and forgotten techniques
A column muses on how modern builders and historians lament lost ancient skills. It cites Roman mortar, unbreakable goblets, Greek fire, art pigments, violin varnish, copper tempering, gold inlay, welded steel, and a Welsh forger’s weld hidden by secrecy. The piece links these vanished know-hows to the fragile continuity of human ingenuity.

New Wood Pulp Liquor Promises Cost Savings and Stronger Pulp
The Milwaukee Journal reports James Lappin of Appleton Wisconsin has proposed a new wood pulp liquor that converts pine and various woods including slabs edgings basswood poplar hemlock and wanarack into pulp. It promises less corrosion and odor than current liquors and claims a 5 to 73 percent lower cost with good manufacturer profits. The pulp is said to cook in about six hours in the digester, producing a firm pliant leatherlike paper suitable for inner soles heels and shanks after expert leather testing.
