G Henk Smittenaar of Dutch Master Builders states he gains satisfaction from constructing homes for those unable to afford them, contrasting with the county’s surplus of housing for the rich and powerful.
Disabled father Nelson Stream and his wife plus three children moved into a new modular home in Clarksburg under the Hanna Replacement House Program funded by a federal grant. The Streams had lived in a one room shanty with outhouse on Burnt Hill Road, with six percent mortgage terms and monthly payments of 360 dollars plus taxes. County officials including County Executive Sidney Kramer and housing chief Rick Farrara attended as the Streams celebrated moving in, highlighting Montgomery County's efforts to bridge the wealth divide with low interest loans and federal support.
An executive described a county effort as a creative solution to a long problem. The next home to be moved is for a divorced man living alone on Sugarland Road in Poolesville. G Henk Smittenaar of Dutch Master Builders completed the Ryland house. He called his current project a plywood box as he aims to finish quickly so the family can begin anew. Mr Stream’s wife worked, children at Damascus High School and Baker Junior High School. Marie 16 has a new room decorated for Christmas, brothers Nelson Jr. 14 and William 12 share a room. Mr Stream’s father Ralph of Monrovia planned to help since his son cannot risk injury. A heavily adorned Christmas tree already sits in the living room. Smittenaar stated he’s glad to build for people who can’t.
