Three Springs Fisheries will issue a souvenir half dollar to mark its 50th anniversary. Located at Lilypons south of Buckertown in Frederick County the business was founded in 1917 by G Leicester Thomas Sr. Initial medallions go on sale Friday at the International Pet and Animal Show in New York City with 10 000 bronze medals and 500 serially numbered antique bronze pieces. Five gold medal lions have been approved by the U S Treasury and one will be given to Miss Lily Pons, the opera star who lent her name in 1932.

State police arson investigators probe a barn fire on Gas House Pike causing 13000 in damage. It is the 19th barn fire in Frederick County since April 2 tied to arson concerns, with 17 suspected arsons in the period. The blaze at Dr Edward Leonard's Chevy Chase farm, rented by Roy Witmer, was discovered at 5 p.m. by Witmer's son Kevin as cows were milking.
