Mediation fails to avert nationwide steel strike
Government mediators drop efforts to resolve the steel wage dispute and send the case to President Truman. CIO President Murray and Steelworkers Union reject an 18 cent an hour wage increase. Taft Hartley action or Wage Stabilization Board could be invoked, with potential 80 day pause or nonbinding recommendations. Price stabilization may allow modest steel price increases under Capehart amendment, while voluntary agreements and inflation concerns loom. Also includes brief holiday church program notes.
