Bombings and killings in Northern Ireland strain Belfast amid violence

In Belfast and across Northern Ireland gunmen killed a 20 year old Catholic passerby, wounded a British soldier, and injured a paramedic in a spate of bombings. A 51 year old grandmother defused a live bomb while an oil truck bomb was defused in Lisburn. The violence, linked to the Irish Republican Army, aims to gut Belfast center by Christmas.

Garrett Towns Viet Toll Highest Of Entire State

In Friendsville Maryland six local residents died in Vietnam shaping a grim record for Garrett County. Air Force Sgt. Tommy Fike the last to die on December 4 1971 raised the town’s toll to one of every 100 residents. Other fallen include Marine Lance Cpl Ross Fike Army Spec 4 Wayne Hook Army Spec 4 Roger Garlick Marine Danny Nicklow and Airman Norman E Thomas. Citizens recall the losses as they mourn and reflect on the war’s impact on their small community.

Nixon Gift of Lincoln Portrait to White House Staff

President and Mrs. Nixon will present full-time White House staff with velvet-cased 8x10 color print of George Healy 1869 portrait of Abraham Lincoln. The image, which graces the State Dining Room, shows Lincoln with elbow on knee and head in hand. Distribution count not released. volunteers who decorated the East and State Rooms earned a photo session with Mrs. Nixon and Julie Eisenhower.
