Leyte Battle Nears End Says MacArthur in Initial Report
General MacArthur announced the Leyte battle was rapidly drawing to a close with the destruction of the Yamashita line on the northwest coast. The 77th Division and First Cavalry closed gaps near Valencia and Anango, trapping Japanese forces as Mindoro reports no opposition. Japanese losses mounted with 1,541 dead and nine planes shot down as American forces pressed from the north and along the Ormoc corridor toward Palompon.
