A major blaze in Baltimore drew swift response as flames swept a large area near downtown. Reports indicate several ocean steamers were damaged or destroyed, with ongoing efforts to control the fire and assess casualties and property loss. Authorities cordon the district while investigators seek the cause.
In Baltimore a major blaze swept two-story buildings and elevators on Hughes Street near the water. A second alarm was quickly raised as flames fed by dry wood and windy conditions. Firefighters focused on saving adjoining property while 30000 bushels of corn and wheat burned or were damaged by water. Several vessels and a harbor crane were moved and the mill workforce of about twenty was left temporarily unemployed.
Congress in Washington on December 20 saw Senator Cullom propose a bill to create a board of railroad commissioners and regulate interstate commerce.
