Albert N. McCardell said the unemployment compensation board will close the year with expenditure under $1 million due to higher employment from the war. In 1928 the first full year of operation saw benefits exceed $10 million, while 1943’s total was offset by treasury interest, leaving more than $1 million in the board’s balance on Sept 30. Benefits paid to the unemployed through November reached about $45,008, the year’s low.
