FDA approves acellular whooping cough vaccine for children
The FDA licensed a new acellular pertussis vaccine for children to replace the older whole cell vaccine for final two shots in the five shot series. It is expected to reduce side effects and boost immunization rates while the older DTP/DPT vaccine remains used for the first three injections. The vaccine has seen long use in Japan for children over two, and the AAP cautions awaiting safety data before full endorsement.
