Sputnik 1 Death Predicted for January
Smithsonian astronomers estimate Sputnik 1 the first artificial satellite launched by Russia will plunge from orbit in early January after a three month lifespan. Dr. Fred L. Whipple cites orbital calculations and notes the final rocket stage likely fell November 30. The satellite’s endurance attributed to its compact shape reducing atmospheric drag. Separately Miss Virginia C. Keech treated for a twisted ankle at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a street fall at 235 North Market Street.
