President Truman said he is drafting a Christmas proclamation calling for nationwide prayers. He spoke at a news conference after replying to Rep Hebert about a day of prayer and noted his Thanksgiving proclamation included prayers. He indicated the Christmas proclamation would satisfy reporters and religious leaders.
Washington December 19 Senate Banking Committee unanimously recommended confirmation of Charles E Wilson as Director of Defense Mobilization. The action comes as the administration seeks to organize wartime economic controls with broad authority for mobilization. James Wilson is expected to be formally approved by the full Senate soon.
In Winchester Hall on Monday eleven men applied for Army or Air Force enlistment, about two thirds of a normal month. Recruiters Robert L. Lane and Birwell Sherman reported one failure in preliminary tests. the rest passed. Applicants split between Army and Air Force will be sent to Martinsburg for final testing on December 26 and 27.
The five day forecast for Maryland calls for continued cold and increasing cloudiness. Light snow is expected in Western Maryland by the afternoon and in eastern sections by night. Snow should end Thursday with a return to continued cold. Warmer conditions are expected over the weekend with rain or snow likely Saturday or Sunday. A prisoner identified as George Smith No. 3, held at the State Reformatory for Males in Washington county, is to be brought to the county jail to stand trial at the January term of Circuit Court on an escape charge. President Truman announced that additional American armed forces will be sent to Europe to join Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's integrated defense command. He named Eisenhower supreme commander and said he spoke with him as the general prepares to select his own staff, with timing and numbers not disclosed.
Greenville veterans 354-member VFW passes resolution backing a Minute Man civil defense corps. Plan aims to form a federally supported program of civilian defense open to all veterans, with $150 equipment cost and $10,000 life insurance, under presidential call, to deter sabotage and respond to enemy attack.

Frank Corbin 74 president of Osgood Bus Lines was pistol whipped and robbed of 850 dollars by two masked men in his Morgantown office.
