White Sulphur Springs West Virginia December 19 American business executives assembled as the joint business conference for recovery to urge cooperation with the government and to offer aid to the President against extreme legislation A preamble sought broad olive branch language and a plan for recovery while committees continued to refine recommendations led by John Raskob of General Motors into an all night session with details to be announced later.
Mrs Ethel Lille Major a gaunt 42 year old mother of two was executed at Hull prison after failed appeals to the King and Queen. A black flag flew over the penitentiary as she faced the gallows, the first English woman hanged in eight years. Three hundred onlookers gathered outside as clemency pleas from Hull’s Lord Mayor Stark proved futile. The jury had urged mercy.
Mrs Elyott Boke Schaffner, 39, a member of a wealthy Carmel clothing family, disappeared from her home on the southern tip of Carmel and may have wandered into the ocean surf or the Carmel River mouth. A large search by village police, with bloodhounds flown in from Berkeley, followed her disappearance after she was released from Monterey Hospital earlier in the week.
New York stocks opened with a sharp selling flurry that pulled the market down and kept it weak through the day. Consolidated Gas hit a fresh low as Washington discussed funds for a municipal plant to lower New York City rates. Bond prices firmed, US government losses narrowed, and crude commodities barely moved.
Miss Emma Gilibert suffered a fractured leg around 11 this morning after a fall in the kitchen of her sister Mrs Charles K Heck at 125 North Market Street. She was taken by ambulance from C E Chine and Son to Frederick City Hospital where the fracture was reduced.
The Federated Charities board met at 22 South Market Street to review December relief rolls showing 72 families in need. Miss Florence Garner reported 34 white and 38 colored households require food fuel and clothing as winter aid.
The Maryland State School for the Deaf will present a public Christmas program Thursday at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium with a varied program including a Make Christmas Real address by Dr Ignatius Byorlee, a benediction by Rev D E Moylan, and student performances across departments.
Eugene R Black, 61, former governor of the Federal Reserve Board, died at his Atlanta home of a heart attack. He helped Roosevelt launch the New Deal and served as contact for the Reconstruction Finance Corp before returning to Fed role. He planned a Washington trip for business yesterday but postponed due to illness.
Washington reports President Roosevelt is in better physical condition than at any time since entering the White House. Dr Ross T McIntire says daily White House pool swims and regular vacations keep him fit, with checks only twice a year, and he remains ready for the congressional session.
Eight American missionaries of the Reformed Church in America arrived at Hankow in a Chinese junk after an eight day voyage evacuating their Shenchow mission station. The party includes Rev and Mrs Jonas Bucher of Lancaster PA Miss Helen Brown of Chambersburg PA and Miss A K Zilerdt of Philadelphia. PERCHFRONS PURCHASED Daniel E Wight owner of Monocacy Farms Frederick has bought three Percheron mares from Eugene Broderick Sons Graceville MN and two more mares from Femco farms Breckenridge MN and twelve other mares from Minnesota and North Dakota. Dr C H Conley of Frederick has entered Percheron breeding and bought two pure bred mares for the Femeo farms both mares black two year olds of imported French bloodlines.
The American Legion Antheory unit held its regular monthly meeting with Mrs Chiggett E Ramsburg presiding. The group announced 200 stamped Christmas postals were sent to ex service men at Peny Point Hospital and that all state hospital ex service men will be remembered by the State Auxiliary. Graves at Mt Olivet Cemetery will be decorated Monday by the Frederick Auxiliary, and a card party is planned for January 19 in the Blue and Grey room of the Francis Scott Key hotel.
The Frederick Pree Kindergarten will stage a Christmas program Friday at 10 a.m. in the Federated Charities building. Miss Margaret Fisenhauer, director, announced the event and invited Parsons and friends to attend the exercises.
Prof Amon Burgee a longtime Frederick County farming leader is named Maryland District Supervisor for the Federal Farm Census effective January 15. He will run operations from Baltimore directing the district excluding the Eastern shore with eighteen Frederick enumerators.

A Christmas banquet and dance by the Frederick Tailoring Company Serial Club is planned for Thursday at 30 o clock at the Hotel Frederick with 149 attending and Joe Breiphen’s orchestra providing music.
The 114th annual service of the Young Men's Bible Society of Frederick County will be held Sunday night January 13 at the evangelical Lutheran church with Frederick area Protestant churches joining. Rev Dr Carl G Rasmussen of Betbet Place Memorial Church Washington DC will speak. The society reports a city Bible canvas by five youths, the first in ten years, and notes the long history of circulating Bibles in local homes.
President Roosevelt indicated readiness to join federal funds with New York or other cities to build municipal power plants if investigations show cheaper operation than private firms. He discussed with Mayor LaGuardia and city officials bids from private companies for next year’s power were dismissed as excessive. Navy also studies if its own plants could lower costs compared to private purchases. The president plans to present final legislative program to Congress in January.
Baltimore December 19 AP Secretary C E Wise of the Maryland Farm Bureau Federation announced the 19th annual convention will be held in Baltimore in January. Plans include a comprehensive program of addresses and entertainment with speakers Mert Wilson, Cheodora Washington, and Miss Jay Sims invited to address the gathering.
One death reported as icy Philadelphia road near Joppa claimed Edward Shoemaker, 42, of Baltimore when his car skidded. Storm warnings spread along the coast with planes grounded. Western Maryland saw heavy snowfall, Cumberland and Hagerstown reports of sleet and rain, while Annapolis and Cambridge braced for steady downpours.
The annual Christmas meeting of Frederick Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, convened Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the Blue and Grey room of the Francis Scott Key hotel. Gifts were exchanged for distribution to poor children via the Children's Aid Society. Madam regent Mrs Jesse B Anders presided. other speakers included Mrs Louis L Wilson and Mrs Magna. A lengthy Christmas program featured readings, songs, a duet, and solos performed by members and guests, with refreshments served to 28 members and 5 guests.
