Retailers sweeten sales as holiday shopping slows
Sluggish sales prompt discounts from Victoria's Secret to 40 percent and Lechter’s Inc to half price on many items. Merchants anticipate a tough season amid stock market volatility and weak overall demand. Internet sales are expected to rise only modestly in November and December, while some chains plan job cuts and store reductions to conserve operating costs. Snowstorms and warm weather squeeze outerwear and mall traffic, with major retailers like Wal Mart reporting weekend results amid softer than expected figures.
