Festival of Lights in Frederick shines with carols and candlelight
More than 300 residents gathered on City Hall front lawn for Frederick’s 17th annual Festival of Lights. Mayor Jim Grimes, four county commissioners, and the Chorale Arts Society led a candlelit carol singalong featuring Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night. Rev Robert Manthey read Mysterious Star as Bill Madden dedicated the evening to the late Mrs Jun Etchison Hanna, founder of the festival.

Building permits Down in Frederick County as costs bite
Permits show a continued downturn from last year with 4,782 fewer in the period. Fees depend on type and size, eight cents per square foot for new residences and four cents for garages and similar, minimum twenty dollars, and forty dollars for mobile homes. Builders cite rising rates and lumber costs, plus job security worries, delaying new housing despite ongoing activity linked to prior permits. A slow recovery is uncertain until the economy stabilizes.
