Eisenhower public service stance tested by 1942 decision

It notes Eisenhower’s belief that United States needs come first, and discusses how that mindset informs current talk of a possible second term and the urgency of leadership in Cold War crises.
20 Hour Day Hoover proposal for White House powers
President Hoover suggests a 20 hour day seven days a week if two hours weekly are given to each of the sixty four agencies reporting to the White House. He would place 35 to 40 agencies under an Administrative Vice President with authority to direct them. An elected Vice President would participate in policy making and public relations, reducing presidential demands to manageable levels. The Vice President’s main duty remains presiding over the Senate only when a tie is possible, with other duties expanding under Eisenhower. City And Town Taxes Bond on municipal debt rise
Roger W. Babson argues U S cities face higher taxes in 1955 and 1956 as municipal debts grow. A study shows taxes take about half of city revenues with New York City debt per capita over 600. Overspending by local governments, costly services, and shifting demands are blamed for the tax burden and debt rise.
