Two men faces theft charges for stealing about 200 empty bags from Farmers Supply Company Walkersville. Charles B. Fogle of Frederick Route 4 and William Franklin Fauble of East Fifth Street were arrested by Lieut Six and Sergt Ben Phebus after finding the suspects asleep in a car on Columbus Avenue Thursday. The car carried wrong tags and a battery and a set of tire chains. Fauble also faces a tag disposal charge. A Peoples Court hearing was planned for Monday.
James A. Grove, longtime city mail carrier, is appointed acting postmaster in Frederick and will assume duties January 1, succeeding retiree Guy K. Motter. Grove, a former Marine, is expected to become postmaster. He is married to Helen Leather, daughter of Lewis E. Leather of Buckeystown, and is the son of Mrs. Cora Grove and the late William C. Grove.
The annual community carol sing, first of Christmas week observances in Frederick, will be Monday at 7 30 PM on the Evangelical Reformed church steps. Sponsored by the Frederick Recreation Commission, the third annual event includes a loud speaker system, printed program, and numerous performances by Lincoln High School Elm Street School Frederick High School St John’s School and local bands. Mayor Munshower will issue greetings and Rev Alihouse will give the invocation.
Harvey H. F. Breedon, 39, identified as a former employee of a local store, was brought back to Frederick from Uniontown, Pa., on charges of false pretense for cashing several checks. He arrived Friday, remained in the local jail awaiting February grand jury action, with bond not yet set. Police say warrants were secured after he moved away, and a lookout was issued. Breerlett was later arrested in Uniontown for a similar offense.
Weekend shoppers crowded stores in clear weather with many first night shopping hours and strong Christmas business. After yesterday’s snow sleet and rain, sun and no more precipitation were forecast with cold temps around 15 to 25 this weekend. In Redding California a father Charley L. Martin aged 43 killed himself after his son Albert Martin of the 27th Division in Korea was killed. The body was found with blood writing on the floor saying Get Stalin Our boys are dying this way. Police said he hammered his nose and used a coat hook to pull the rifle trigger. The incident occurred December 16.
Allied forces abandoned Hambhung to vast Chinese sea wave assaults at the port area on the Sea of Japan. Refugees fled toward the beachhead as demolition charges cleared the city. A 10th Corps spokesman said attacks were being contained with no disastrous outcome. Navy guns and carrier aircraft hit Chinese forces massed along coastal roads while engineers destroyed supplies to deny them.
Washington December 16 The 24th Infantry Division has won a distinguished unit citation for extraordinary heroism in Korea. The award also honors the attached 441st Counter Intelligence Corps team. Troops may wear a blue ribbon over the right pocket. Maj. Gen. John H. Church commands the division.
A Dundalk blaze collapsed a cinder block wall and trapped firefighter Ray Smith, seriously injuring him as two other firemen were hurt. The O'Connor Lumber Co. building in Essex suffered about $125,000 in damage after more than two hours of fighting by seventy firefighters from nine counties. Smith was rescued after about five minutes.
